Family Trip To Coban Guatemala

by Marina K. Villatoro

This is another of our exciting family adventures in Guatemala. This time my husband and I decided that we wanted to take our son for a visit to Semuc Champey and the Lanquin Caves. For that we had to stay in the nearby town of Cobn. But let’s talk about the town first: Cobn is a beautiful town located in the Alta Verapaz Department of Guatemala. It is located 1320 meters above sea level so it gets a bit chilly at night. It is also one of the major coffee producers of the country. Plus it is located among mountains and forests that guard one of Guatemala’s treasures: the Monja Blanca Orchid. (this country’s national flower).

It is also the place where the famous Rabin Ahau takes place in july. This is a beauty contest. But this is not a reagular beauty contest, it is a bit different of what we are used to. In it native Guatemalan women wear their typical dresses and perform a series of presentations that include talking in their mayan language and dancing traditional marimba songs. By the way Rabin Ahau means daughter of the king.

As our accommodations in this cute town we decided to chose a tiny but beautiful hotel called Casa Duranta. It’s not luxurious, it’s not a super famous resort but it is beautiful, has gorgeous gardens and the rooms are very private. The decoration is also simple but with many typical Guatemalan aspects. I really enjoyed staying in it.

Before going to Semuc Champey and Lanquin we decided that we wanted to get to know the town a little bit better so we spent our first day in Coban walking along the town. We ended up getting to this town’s central park which I have to admit looks a lot better than I thought. There are also many beautiful handcrafts stands all over the place. There is also a small but informative and filled with interesting mayan artifacts museum called Principe Maya Archaeological Museum.

The next morning before we started our adventure to the main touristic spots of the region we went to another nearby hotel called La posada for a lovely breakfast. - 40080

Things To See And Do In Brighton

21. August 2010 category Uncategorized

by Mark Walters

Brighton England is the summer place to be in the UK, and all other seasons as well! Take a walk along Brighton’s lovely beaches, jump into some water sports or spend some time at the Royal Pavilion.

What is Brighton most known for? Why, it’s beaches of course! Brighton Beach is one of the Top 10 city beach attraction destinations in the world. And when you’re done with the fun in the sun, head to Brighton Pier, right in back of the beach for a cool drink at a beachside club. So take a siesta on the pebbly beach, walk along the water, enjoy a snack or a cold drink in one of Brighton’s many clubs and cafes, or find a water sport to enjoy. Once the sun goes down Brighton’s clubs come to life and you’ll be able to dance the night away!

Now, the Royal Pavilion. It is the fabulous “Palace by the Sea” of the Prince Regent, George IV. Built by John Nash, between 1815 and 1822, it remains one of the most spectacular and exotic of all buildings in the UK. You will see furniture and art, including pieces lent by Her Majesty the Queen. There is a tearoom overlooking the gardens and a shop. Audio Guides in many languages are available.

Brighton offers many cool, green relaxing places to get away from the hustle bustle of the beach and pier. As a matter of fact, there are 98 parks and gardens in the area. One of them is Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean. Rudyard Kipling lived at The Elms from 1897-1902 where you will find the Kipling Gardens. You can picnic in the garden and check out the herb garden and the croquet lawn.

Don’t pass by the 14,000 acres of National Park that are in and around Brighton and Hove. When you get a little tired of the heat of the beach and the excitement of the clubs, take a stroll through the parks or a bike ride. Enjoy the local “flora and fauna”. Brighton’s natural areas are a cool getaway from the sights and sounds of the beach and pier.

Those are just some of the places to visit and attractions to see in Brighton. Without doubt it is worth visiting, so be sure to find some time to experience it for yourself. - 40080
